AFTER THE NEEDLE
Congratulations on your new tattoo!
It’s an exciting time, and proper aftercare is essential to ensure it heals beautifully. Here’s how to take care of it:
1. Keep It Covered
* For the first few hours after getting your tattoo, leave the bandage on to protect it from bacteria and dirt.
* When you’re ready to remove the bandage, wash your hands first, then gently peel it off.
2. Clean It Gently
* Use lukewarm water and mild, unscented soap to wash your tattoo. Avoid using a washcloth or anything abrasive.
* Gently pat your tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or soft cloth. Don’t rub!
3. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment
* For the first few days, use a fragrance-free, tattoo-specific ointment (like Aquaphor or A&D ointment). Apply a thin layer—don’t overdo it!
* After the first 3-5 days, switch to a fragrance-free lotion or moisturizer. Continue using it for 2 weeks.
4. Avoid Picking or Scratching
* It’s normal for your tattoo to itch and flake, but don’t scratch or pick at it! Let the scabs fall off naturally to avoid scarring.
5. Keep It Moisturized
* Dry skin can make the healing process harder. Keep your tattoo moisturized to prevent it from cracking or peeling too much.
6. No Soaking or Swimming
* Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, or any body of water during the healing process (around 2-4 weeks). Long soaks can introduce bacteria and affect healing.
7. Avoid Sun Exposure
* Your tattoo is sensitive to the sun, so try to avoid direct sunlight for a few weeks. Once healed, always apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect the colors and lines.
8. Wear Loose Clothing
* Tight clothes can rub against your tattoo and irritate it. Opt for loose, breathable fabrics to avoid friction.
9. Stay Active, But Be Careful
* Light movement is fine, but if your tattoo is in a place where friction is common (like elbows or knees), try to be mindful and avoid excessive rubbing or bending during the healing process.
10. Healing Time
* Healing usually takes around 2-4 weeks for the surface to heal completely, but deeper layers may take a couple of months. Be patient and continue to care for it!
